A lot of people wonder how much it costs to build a website, so we decided to write the most detailed and accessible information on this question. For your convenience we recommend using the page navigation, since there is a lot of information and not all of it may be interesting to you
If you turn to a freelancer or any agency with the question, «so how much does website development cost?», in response you'll get a series of other questions, and that's normal, it would be worse if they told you a price right away. For example, you might be asked: «What type of website do you need?», «Should the site be built on a CMS or a framework?», «Do you need a design, or will you use a ready-made solution?», «Do you have a brief?», «What goals should the website serve?» and a number of other questions. So let's break down each of these questions in detail, and based on them get familiar with the cost of building a website.
Most of the calculations regarding the timeline and cost of website development were made based on projects of average complexity, ones that were carried out at our studio. Some calculations were adjusted based on market analysis
Cost of website development by stage
Development of any type of website consists of certain stages of work. Of course, for small and medium projects, some of them can be neglected to save budget. But let's look at all the possible stages of work and calculate the cost of building a website for each of them. Let
A website is one of the marketing tools, and its main goal is to bring the owner revenue. So before you get to the brief (hereinafter TOR), you need to:
- Define your business goals and draw up a plan for meeting them
- Analyze the market and competitors
- Decide who exactly your target audience is
- Create a competitive USP based on the market and customer situation
- Discuss possible details of your project's development with the required specialists
- Determine the most optimal development options for you
- Draw up a plan for promoting the business
Only once all the questions above have been answered can you move on to drafting the project brief, and in turn, the brief for all the technical specialists
Below is a table of the timeline and cost of website strategy and the brief, by website type
| Website type | Duration | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page | 4 days | $320 |
| Business card website or catalogue website | 7 days | $560 |
| Corporate website or online store | 10 days | $960 |
SEO preparation: timeline and cost
This stage is intended for collecting and clustering the keyword core (hereinafter KC). This is needed in order to build the site structure the right way
The KC is a set of words and phrases related to a particular topic of the site. It is the foundation of SEO promotion for a website and is responsible for the traffic that will come to the site from organic search. You can learn more about how SEO pricing is formed here
Also at this stage the SEO specialist

| Corporate website or online store | 7 days | $560 |
Cost and timeline of website prototype development
A prototype is a schematic representation of the elements (menu, buttons, photos, forms, etc.) for all pages of the website. Without a prototype it's impossible to accurately estimate the cost of website development, so it should be made for websites of varying complexity and type. For the most accurate estimate, the prototype is developed according to the wishes for integrating certain features from an SEO and marketing point of view

A website's visual concept – the main design idea. Designed to make a website truly unique and one-of-a-kind. Sites with a unique concept always stay memorable to people.
Our designers usually develop two concept options for the homepage and submit them for approval. After you make your choice, we move on to working on the inner pages, following the design idea of the approved concept. Timelines and costs are usually similar for every website type, so we've listed only one example in the table
| Name | Duration | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage visual concept | 2-5 days | $195-480 |
Timeline and cost of designing the site's inner pages
It's impossible to name an average cost for inner-page design, since the number of unique pages and the number of blocks on each page varies from project to project. For example, one corporate website might have 11 unique pages, another 30. So in the table we've given the average timeline and cost per hour of work for one page.
| Name | Duration | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 page | 3-24 hours | $10/hr |
Also for your convenience we've created a table of website design projects that we've worked on. This will let you understand how much the design of a certain project of varying complexity ended up costing overall. To learn more details about a project, click the project name and all the detailed information will open up

Cost of content filling
It's hard to define timelines for filling a website with content, since it all depends on the website type and the amount of information that needs to be added. So in this case, we've stated that the average cost of this work is estimated at $3-4/hr
Cost of project administration
Website administration includes the following work:
- Updating the system and individual modules for better site performance
- Administering mail services and hosting
- Creating website backups and restoring them (if needed)
- Recommendations for optimizing and modernizing the resource
- Publishing news, articles or other text and graphic information
- Monitoring domain and hosting expiration and paying for them on time
- Monitoring information and virus security
- Configuring the operation of additional modules
| Specialist | Cost |
|---|---|
| Content manager | $7/hr |
| Copywriter | $5/1000 characters |
| Graphic designer | $8/hr |
| Web administrator | $8/hr |
Cost of training the client / staff
Since any website is built with an admin panel, there's an opportunity to administer and fill it yourself. It's exactly for such cases that there's a stage for training your staff on how to work with the admin panel. The cost of this service doesn't depend on the website type or other characteristics, it's based on the number of hours spent on training. So the average cost of this service is estimated at $6-7/hr
Overall calculation of website development cost
If you've read this far, it means you're genuinely interested in how much building a website costs, so in the tables below you'll see the full picture of the website's cost, and find out when and on what you can save.

| Training the client or their staff | $35 | $50 | $50 | $50 | |
| Total | $285 | $495 | $1535 | $2955 | |
First of all, we'd like to point out that building this type of website on a framework isn't practical, since that option is the most expensive in terms of both money and time. Also, if you're planning to run marketing on the site, you can forget about a builder too. That leaves two options for development, between a template and a unique CMS-based site. For example, if you want to quickly test out a certain product/service while saving money, you can go with the template option and later improve it into a custom design. However, if it's feasible, we always recommend going with unique solutions, since they're tailored to a specific audience segment and are developed based on market and competitor analysis. If you've decided to go with developing a landing page with a unique design, we can help you with that. More about landing page development at our agency.
Let's also look at which stages you can save on, explain each of them, and put together one more table
- Website strategy and brief. You, better than anyone, know what you want from the website and what it needs to do and communicate to the customer. So you can work on the strategy and brief for website development yourself. That way saving $320
- Visual concept. If you like the concept from the first option presented, then you won't need another option made and you can save $50-100
- Building the admin panel. Not every Landing page needs an admin panel developed, and if you're sure there won't be changes to the page, or there will be very few, then you can skip building the admin panel and save another $120.
- Testing. You can also carry out this stage yourself. However, it only covers the visual side. How do you do it, you might think? Very simply, you take whatever devices you have and check that the site displays correctly on all devices/browsers. If you find a «bug», draw up a document listing what needs to be fixed.
- Content filling and training on how to work with the admin panel. If there's an admin panel, you'll be able to fill the whole site yourself, but if there isn't one, then this work will have to be delegated to specialists. So here you should think about what's worth saving on and what's better to have done for you.
Cost of developing a Landing page on a CMS, with savings applied:
| Stage name | Template option | Unique design |
|---|---|---|
| Website strategy and brief | $0 | $0 |
| SEO preparation | $80 | $100 |
| Website prototype | $0 | $90 |
| Visual concept | $0 | $100 |
| UI/UX design | $0 | $100 |
| Layout | $0 | $300 |
| Front-end development | $0 | $60 |
| Assembling templates and setting them up | $50 | - |
| Back-end development | $120 | $120 |
| Building the admin panel | $120 | $0 |
| Testing | $40 | $0 |
| Content filling | $35 | $35 |
| Project administration | $0 | $0 |
| Training the client or their staff | $50 | $0 |
| Total | $495 | $905 |
Comparing these two tables, we can draw a short conclusion on the question «how much does website development cost?». The gist of that conclusion is as follows: if you have time to devote to the project and to work you can do yourself to save money, that lets you save around $650 on developing a landing page with a unique design
A team for professional website development
Let's look at which specialists are needed to build a quality website. Let's also talk about their salary level, what each of them does, put together a table for the cost of website development based on hourly rates of specialists, and analyze what you can save on.
To build a quality website, you need to bring in anywhere from 4 to 17 people (and sometimes it takes far more, or several specialists from a certain category of work). This is explained by the fact that it depends on the website type and its complexity. Below you can get familiar with which specialists are involved in website development, and what their market salary is. We'd like to note that the salary was taken as an average across Ukraine based on various sources, such as work and dou . Besides that, the specialist level taken was below-average and average, with 1+ years of experience. So based on this we can conclude that in certain regions of the country and for certain specialist qualifications the situation may be different, either lower or higher)
Project management
Project manager $850/moWhat each specialist does
Now that you know which specialists are involved, we can move on to the information on who's responsible for what, and then move on to the table of website development cost according to the work of specific specialists.
- Project manager . First of all, this specialist is responsible for communication between you and every team member. They coordinate everyone's work, sign off on various points in the project, and decide what stays within the office walls, and what gets sent to you for approval. Besides this, they monitor work deadlines and how well execution matches the brief. In other words, they handle the full management of the project, and you won't have to spend time communicating with each specialist and explaining to each of them what needs to happen.
- Marketer. These days everyone knows who marketers are and what they do. From a website development standpoint, marketers study and identify the target audience for the future website, analyze competitor sites (highlighting good solutions for integration), and figure out what needs the site should meet, and prepare a brief for the content manager, UX designer, and web designer.
Will your website sell without marketing?
We think the answer is definitely No. So we suggest getting familiar with the cost of marketing services for a website:
- SEO specialist. The main job of an SEO specialist during website development is collecting the KC, on-page SEO optimization, and writing the brief for the UX designer, layout developer, and SEO copywriter.
- SEO copywriter. Responsible for creating text content for the site's sections, according to the brief received from the SEO specialist
- UX designer. Responsible for making sure the site is as convenient and effective as possible for the target audience. One of the main tasks they perform is thinking through the structure of pages and their individual blocks. Based on this, they create a visualization of the site structure and build a prototype for the website
- UI designer. The counterpart to UX. That is, while UX handles the structure and planning of pages, the UI designer is responsible for their visual appearance. They're the one who thinks through the visual concept and sets the tone for the future website
- Web designer. This kind of designer understands both Ux and Ui design for websites. So they help their colleagues during their work. At a certain skill level, they determine which direction to move further in, Ux or Ui.
- Web architect. This specialist's main task – choosing the technologies to implement the project and understanding how each technology will interact best to meet the required tasks. Besides this, they determine when a certain ready-made solution can be used, and when custom functionality needs to be built. They're also responsible for the possibility of easy project scaling and determine the foundation for its future scaling, both vertically and horizontally, if needed for the project.
- Layout developer. This specialist is exactly the one who turns the finished website design into understandable machine code (in this case Html and Css) and builds the page structure. They're responsible for making sure the site, or its individual elements, display correctly on various devices, browsers and systems. Once they've reached the necessary skills, layout developers grow into Frontend developers.
- Frontend dev. In truth this specialist has a range of tasks, and unfortunately they can't be described briefly. On top of that, a lot of people confuse the work of a layout developer and the work of a frontend dev. So to explain this, we have a great article on our blog. But briefly, a frontend developer is responsible for functionality that's usually executed on the client side. For example, making sure that all the site's elements (buttons, text, photos, etc.) match the design and don't overlap each other is handled by the layout developer, while making sure those buttons, photos or other elements carry out their actual purpose (for example, a play button shown on a photo that opens a video in a modal window on click, or a buy button on a product card that, on click, sends the product to the cart and a certain request to the server to reserve that product) is handled by the frontend specialist. Another well-known example is working with product filtering and sorting, meaning in this case correct placement in the structure and correct display are handled by the layout developer, while the target action (i.e. sorting products by the chosen criterion, or filtering by criteria) – is handled by the frontend specialist.
- Backend dev. A specialist who carries one of the hardest jobs – writing the site functionality related to the server-side hardware and software layer. Put simply, this is the person who builds everything you and the site's visitors never see.
- Web administrator. First of all, the web administrator chooses hosting for the website and handles its technical setup. Besides this, they organize protection of the site from various kinds of possible attacks, for example the well-known one – spam. After the project is delivered, this specialist is responsible for a number of other tasks, including:
- Improving site performance through server optimization
- Monitoring security
- Technical support of the site (minimal adjustments without involving frontend and backend developers, for example updating plugins if the site is built on a CMS)
- Monitoring site uptime and a number of other tasks
- Content manager. Organizes the work between the copywriter, SEO copywriter, translator and graphic designer. Besides this, is responsible for filling the site with information received from each of the assigned specialists.
- Copywriter. Writes blog news according to the brief from the content manager
- Translator. Translates various information for the site. This can include both news and other sections of the site, or the technical specs of products.
- Graphic designer. From a website development standpoint, this specialist is needed first and foremost to develop graphics and ad banners, infographics, and so on
Website cost relative to time spent by specialists
We already know which specialists are needed for website development and we've gotten familiar with their market salaries and the tasks they perform during work. So now, with a clear conscience, we can calculate how much building a website costs based on the work of specific specialists. For this we've put together a price table, in whose calculation we used a project of average complexity (below we'll attach a link to that project and other useful links) and the hourly rates of the specialists who work at our agency
| Specialist | Hours worked | Hourly rate ($) | Specialist's cost ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project manager | 20 | $8/hr | $160 |
| SEO specialist | 80 | $6/hr | $480 |
| Web designer | 176 | $8/hr | $1408 |
| Layout developer | 80 | $5/hr | $400 |
| Frontend dev | 55 | $10/hr | $550 |
| Backend dev | 105 | $15/hr | $1575 |
| Web administrator | 22 | $4/hr | $88 |
| Total hours: 538 | Average hourly rate: $8 | Cost of website development: $4,661 | |
The cost of creating the SEO content for the site and filling it is calculated below.
We'd like to note there's no need to be alarmed by the SEO copywriter's hours and the cost of all the content, since it will vary from project to project. In this case, it was necessary to write 1,782,000 characters worth of content. That's why the number came out the way it did
| Specialist | Hours worked | Hourly rate ($) | Specialist's cost ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO copywriter | 1,188 | $5/hr | $5,940 |
| Content manager | 56 | $4/hr | $224 |
| Cost of website content | $6,164 | ||
Other project expenses
| Name | Cost |
|---|---|
| Domain purchase for 1 year | $16 |
| Hosting purchase for 1 year | $55 |
| Photographer | $255 |
| Total | $326 |
| Overall project cost | $11,151 |
Now let's briefly go over the information in the table above. First of all, it shows that not all of the specialists we mentioned in this section were involved in the work, since there was no need for them on this project. The hourly rate calculations were based on the average salary of a given specialist at our agency, with an 8-hour working day. The project examined in this example: an online store selling solid fuel and lumber
When looking at the project, we recommend assessing separately: the cost of building the website and the cost of marketing (which is exactly what the SEO texts belonged to). Besides this, you can pay attention to the site's positions for certain search queries. Only once you take all the factors into account will you understand why the cost came out the way it did, and its actual value.(
What you can save on
Honestly speaking, you won't really manage to save money. Because no matter how much you want to, sooner or later it will actually lead to higher costs
For example, you might think: «why do I need 4-5 different designers, 3-4 developers, and all those marketers and content managers anyway? I'd rather hire one designer, one developer, and handle the tasks of your project managers, marketers and content managers myself» It's entirely up to you, you can do it that way if you think it's best, but when scaling the project, or launching a marketing campaign, this approach will bring quite a few extra costs. So before thinking about saving from the point of view of a particular specialist, think about the following phrase
You will definitely get a good website if specialists in a given niche work on it. But an outstanding result comes only when you bring in narrowly specialized specialists into the work
From this phrase we can draw one simple conclusion: «If you want to combine in one person the work that 2-3 people are meant to do, you need to be aware of the eventual result and the possible consequences of that in the future».
So if your main goal is to get a cheap website, we recommend ordering the development from freelancers, since most of them work on exactly that principle, where one specialist combines several roles. But if it's important for you to earn revenue from the site, see its quality, and be confident about easy scaling options, then you should look into working with digital agencies or specialized agencies
The price of building a website depending on the contractor
Depending on the chosen contractor, the cost of website development can vary greatly. Even if the type of contractor is the same, for example two different digital agencies, the cost between them can also differ significantly. This is explained by the experience and qualifications of their specialists at one agency versus another. Experienced specialists cost considerably more. For example, comparing backend developers, a junior position's salary starts from $800, a middle position from $1800, and a senior position will start from $3000. Besides this, two different agencies may skip certain stages of work: to save on project cost, or due to a shortage of specialists for certain work. We covered the Cost of website development by stage above, so if you skipped that, we recommend checking it out too. Now let's briefly get to know each contractor and how much building a website costs with each of them
Cost of website development with a freelancer
In this case, we're looking at a freelancer as one person who handles website development from start to finish. That is, they independently create the site design, code it, program it, fill it with content, and communicate with you at the same time. This option is the best solution for saving money. However, it's also worth understanding that freelancers don't always charge low rates, since they may position themselves at a middle or senior specialist service level. At the same time, count the time of each individual specialist and determine the cost of a given stage of work. With this approach, the project carries certain risks, since one person can't be a good specialist (let alone an expert) in different fields (such as marketing, planning, design, programming, etc.), so you should think carefully before starting work with one person
The main advantage of working with a freelancer:
- low project cost
Disadvantages of working with a freelancer:
- Projects aren't always delivered on time
- You'll have to monitor every stage of the work
- There's a confidentiality protection issue
- Few take on long-term projects
- The final quality of the website won't always meet your expectations
- When refining the site, difficulties may arise, since the freelancer may be busy the next time you reach out, or unable to finish what you need. In that case, even when you find a new freelancer, they may complain about the unprofessional development of the site and recommend redoing it
Depending on skill level, the hourly rate of this kind of contractor ranges within $4-6/hr . Based on this, the timeline and cost of developing a given website type will look approximately as follows
| Website type | Number of pages | Execution time | Project cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landin-page | 1 (up to 12 sections) | 2-3 days | $80 - $120 |
| Business card website | 6 | 3-5 days | $80 - $200 |
| Corporate website | 10 | 5-7 days | $200 - $280 |
| Catalogue website | 8 | 6-9 days | $240 - $360 |
| Catalogue website | 12 | 9-12 days | $360 - $400 |
We'd like to note that this option is calculated for developing a template website, since one freelancer won't be able to build a unique project tailored to your audience and business goals. For developing a unique project you need to turn to other contractors, which we'll cover below
Cost of website development with a team of freelancers
This kind of contractor can build a website option either on a template or with a unique design. Besides this, project development quality will be considerably higher, since more than one person will be working on the project during development, usually people like this (designer, layout developer, programmer), and when texts are needed, (copywriters and marketers) get brought in.
The main advantage of choosing this kind of contractor is a slightly cheaper project cost compared to a digital agency and considerably better result quality compared to a single freelancer, while the main drawback – the contractor's lack of interest in your project's development and, in some cases, poor organization
You've probably wondered why we mention that they're not interested in working on development? That's explained very simply, they look for short-term projects, since they can't be sure how long any given team member will keep working with them. Sometimes different teams get put together for every project, so there's no cohesion. Of course you could say that for such cases you could appoint a lead, and assign a number of other people, but then that's already closer to how digital agencies operate
Depending on skill level, for each individual freelancer the average hourly rate will be in the range of $6-10/hr , and the cost of building a given type of website will look approximately like this
| Website type | Pages | Execution time | Project cost | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

The price of building a website at a Digital Agency
Our agency belongs exactly to this type of contractor. Let's look at the main advantages of working with us, or with other digital agencies:
- Organizing work between specialists and monitoring the quality of services provided
No freelance team will worry about the quality of organizational aspects, since everyone thinks only of themselves.
- More qualified and motivated specialists compared to freelance teams, who don't care at all how your project turns out in the end.
Any freelancer's task is to spend as little time as possible on the project so they can take on the next one sooner and earn more income. Meanwhile, agency employees receive a market salary, so they're well motivated and give their work their all. In turn, the agency strives to work with clients long-term, so it focuses on quality of service and on results
- Expertise at an agency is considerably higher than at freelance teams
This is explained by the fact that agency employees constantly work with one another, exchange useful information, share their life experience and solve certain tasks and problems together that may come up. A freelancer, or freelance team – is limited by their own skills and tackles tasks alone, they don't brainstorm or exchange information. This in turn leads to the fact that each freelancer works with their own particular idea of the project, despite the fact that they're working on a certain team.
- The approach to carrying out the work and the project's quality
Put briefly, a freelancer, or a team of freelancers only does the work they were told to do. They don't think about whether this solution will be good for marketing, whether the project will grow in the future, and so on. A digital agency, in turn, cares about your project. It chooses the toolkit, gives recommendations on what's worth doing first, and what you can save on, and thinks ahead about how the project should bring you profit. In other words, the agency will do a lot of the routine work for you that you would otherwise have had to do yourself while working with a freelance team
- Projects are always delivered on time, according to the deadlines specified in the contract from the start of the cooperation.
The main drawbacks of this kind of contractor compared to freelancers include – a higher project cost and longer completion times.
Let's look at how much it costs to build a website at a digital agency, given that the average hourly rate of a specialist is $12/hr and the site is developed through most of the necessary stages we talked about earlier
| Website type | Number of pages | Template option | Unique | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Term. | Price | Term. | Price | ||
| Landing page | 1 | 4 days | $385 | 14 days | $1315 |
| Business card website | 6 | 6 days | $575 | 32 days | $3175 |
| Corporate website | 10 | 8 days | $770 | 51 days | $4650 |
| Online store | 12 | 14 days | $1345 | 59 days | $6150 |
If you go to an agency, let's say for example with a request: I need a website for my company, how much does that type of website development cost? And you get an answer of up to $1000, then you can be confident that the site will be built either from a template (though they may assure you it's a unique design), or the project will have a maximum of 2-3 people assigned and it will take up to 8 days.
How much does it cost to build a website at a specialized company
As you might have already guessed, the cost of website development with this kind of contractor will be considerably higher, this is explained by the fact that each stage of work is handed off to a specialized studio that specifically only handles that stage. Besides this, this kind of contractor doesn't work with template solutions at all. For example, you hand off website design to an agency that specifically does website design, you entrust website development to another specialized development agency, marketing – to yet another, and so on. Then the final quality of every stage will end up close to ideal. But there's one catch, and that's the price of this pleasure, which will be considerably higher compared to other contractors, for example a digital agency. The average hourly rate of a specialist at this kind of agency is $30-50/hr. Given this figure, the cost of website development for a given type will look approximately like this
| Website type | No. of pages | Timeline | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landing page | 1 | 18 days | $5760 |
| Business card website | 6 | 41 days | $13,120 |
| Corporate website | 10 | 66 days | $21,120 |
| Catalogue website | 8 | 57 days | $18,240 |
| Online store | 12 | 76 days | $24,320 |
The table clearly shows that development ends up costing quite a bit more here compared to digital agencies, which is why small and medium businesses can't always afford to work with this kind of contractor
The price of building a website at a TOP web studio in Ukraine
We're finally on the home stretch, all that's left is to look at the cost of website development with this contractor and move on to the conclusions. First of all, we'd like to say that this kind of contractor doesn't always carry out separate tasks, for example: development separately, design separately, and so on. They look at things on a much larger scale and take on comprehensive branding solutions for your company. But since a website is an integral part of branding, we'll also look at how much it costs to build a website at a TOP web studio in Ukraine. Timeline and cost of developing a Landing page
Landing page (a single-page website) – one of the website types whose main task is to «make» the visitor take a required target action. Such actions usually include: ordering a service, buying a product, signing up for an event, registering, subscribing to a newsletter, a phone call, and so on. This type of website is best suited for informing about a certain service, a single product, or a certain upcoming event. Landing page pricing, in most cases, is close to the price of a business card website, despite the fact that a landing page is a single-page site, and a business card website is multi-page. However there are reasons for this, and once you get to know landing pages in more detail, you'll understand why this happens. We'd also like to note that landing page development isn't suited for every niche and business, you can learn more about it on our blog

Timeline and cost of building an online store
Online store – a website designed for the online sale of products. In implementation, this is the most complex type of website (among those covered on this page), since it contains a lot of functionality needed for customers to work comfortably with the site, and for your managers to process orders and get in touch with customers. The main functionality of an online store: working with the APIs of various delivery companies, online payment through working with bank APIs, product reservation, product modifications, wholesale prices with the possibility of discounts, a personal account for customers and managers, smart search, and so on. The price of building an online store can vary greatly, this is all explained by the fact that different online stores go through a different number of stages during development and have different functionality, a different number of products, work on different devices (not just as websites, but as apps for phones or PCs) and a number of other factors. The price of building an online store (with a minimal set of functionality) starts from $2000. If you're interested in developing an online store, you can get more detailed information about the process of working at our agency here

Additional costs of website development
We'd like to note that depending on project complexity, the additional costs described in the table below can vary a lot. For example, sites that will have heavy load should get a dedicated server. The cost of integrating external services will depend on how complex the work with the API is and how large the project itself is. Even a domain, seemingly nothing special about it, is actually not that simple either, and domains vary in price too. For example, there are domains whose price can amount to a thousand, tens, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. So in this case we'll look at the simplest cost options
| Name | Cost |
|---|---|
| Hosting | $50-70 / yr |
| Domain | $20 / yr |
| CRM integration | from $500 |
| External resource integration | from $700 |
Cost price of an hour of agency work
For those who are genuinely curious about this question, let's look a little at the introductory part
Any digital agency – is the same kind of business as yours. This is explained by extremely simple signs. The agency pays its employees, pays taxes, rents premises, pays for utilities, purchases the necessary furniture, equipment, and invests money in marketing to attract new clients
A lot of people don't understand all the nuances and don't realize why this kind of business's services cost what they do. A lot of people are also surprised how it is that at one agency the exact same website costs $1000 and at another $10,000 or even more. This is all actually explained simply, and below we'll try to convey the gist of it for everyone.
Imagine, for example, and answer the question: «If an agency pays a specialist $5/hr, what hourly rate will be quoted for you?» (don't read further, try to answer it yourself first and then compare answers).
To really answer this question, you need to understand the agency's scale, but let's take, for example, a small agency with a staff of 15-20 specialists. First, let's get familiar with the diagram legend, and below we'll give examples of them.
- Salaries – the money «take-home» that specialists assigned to a given agency department receive
- Taxes – taxes that the agency pays based on the average revenue turnover of a given department's projects
- Office – office rent payments and expenses on stationery, equipment depreciation, and more.
- Managers – expenses on specialists who don't do technical work. This includes project managers, sales managers, accountants, and so on.
- Marketing – investments to attract new clients for a given department of the agency
Each diagram clearly shows that the lion's share of expenses falls on specialists. So, in order for the agency to cover all its costs, the specialist's hourly rate needs to be quoted to the client at 3 times (K=3) higher, and in order for the studio to be able to operate and earn money, this coefficient needs to be at least 4 (K=4). At most agencies with up to 30 employees, exactly this coefficient (K=4) is observed, but at agencies with 50+ employees, the coefficient can be 4 (K=4) or considerably more. This is explained by the fact that at larger agencies, more people get assigned to a project, and the project goes through more stages. So the answer to the question would be as follows
Any agency with 15-20 specialists will take $4 from you for every dollar paid to a specialist. Based on the question posed, from $5 they would accordingly charge $20/hr
The specialist's hourly rate for the agency to break even at «0»
To calculate this, you can use the following formula:
S = (Sm / d / h) * K
- S – the specialist's hourly rate quoted to the client
- Sm – the specialist's salary at the agency (average specialist salaries across Ukraine were reviewed here
- d – number of working days worked
- h – number of hours worked per day
- K – the minimum coefficient (overhead) that needs to be applied for the agency to break even
Based on the formula above, the hourly rate of a given specialist can be summarized in the following table
| Specialist | Average salary of a specialist in Ukraine ($) | Specialist's hourly rate($) | Specialist's hourly rate at the agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project manager | $890.4 | $5.3 | $21.2 |
| Marketer | $705.6 | $4.2 | $16.8 |
| PPC | $772.8 | $4.6 | $18.4 |
| SEO specialist | $621.6 | $3.7 | $14.8 |
| SEO copywriter | $571.2 | $3.4 | $13.6 |
| Illustrator | $705.6 | $4.2 | $16.8 |
| UI/UX designers | $856.8 | $5.1 | $20.4 |
| Web designer | $840 | $5 | $20 |
| Layout developer | $520.8 | $3.1 | $12.4 |
| Frontend dev | $1,041.6 | $6.2 | $24.8 |
| Backend dev | $1,646.4 | $9.8 | $39.2 |
| Web administrator | $520.8 | $3.1 | $12.4 |
| Content manager | $470.4 | $2.8 | $11.2 |
| Copywriter | $520.8 | $3.1 | $12.4 |
| Translator | $688.8 | $4.1 | $16.4 |
| Graphic designer | $520.8 | $3.1 | $12.4 |

Why is website development priced differently at different agencies?
The main reason for this is that a small agency's hourly rate is significantly lower compared to a medium, large, or narrowly specialized agency. Although in most cases, every studio has the same profit margin. This is explained by the fact that at small agencies the specialist's hourly rate is lower, rent for office space and other expenses factored into project cost calculations are lower, compared to other contractors. Medium-sized studios hire specialists with a solid level of knowledge in their niche, and such agencies also don't need a large office. This is good for the client because the level of service will be considerably higher, while the price of services stays reasonable. The highest expenses in terms of staff and office are seen at large agencies and narrowly specialized ones. Large agencies spend a significant amount of money on office rent and on intermediary specialists (managers, administrators, accountants, etc.), while specialized agencies spend a significant amount of money on salaries for their specialists, since they hire only professionals in their field.
Another reason – different agencies build websites with a different number of stages and using different technologies. You can find detailed information on website development cost by stage here
What's the difference between a website with a unique design and one with a template?
First of all, a unique design is tailored exclusively to the business's needs. Besides this, it naturally involves developing a website design that isn't repeated on other websites. Such solutions are created from scratch and go through all the development stages covered on this page.
A template website comes with an already-created website design and fully ready functionality, whatever is provided for in that particular template. All that's left for specialists to do is install the template on a given CMS platform, configure it, in some cases optimize it (though this is done very rarely), and fill it with your content.
What affects the cost of website development?
The main key factors that affect the cost of building a website include:
- Website type. Different website types cost differently. You can find detailed information on development cost by website type here
- Design. This one's pretty self-explanatory, you need to choose whether it will be a template solution or a unique one.
- Functionality. This means whether the project will have the standard functionality provided for a given website type, or custom functionality will need to be built.
- Stages. The cost of website development by stage is something we also covered on this page. Based on that material, if you drop certain stages of work, the final cost can be 15-35% lower.
- Technologies. During development, both CMS and various frameworks can be used. So innovative and custom solutions cost considerably more.
- Time. The less time there is to complete the project, the more expensive it will be.
