Pros and cons of building a unique website design for marketing
For your convenience, we've put together a comparison table of building a unique design versus choosing a template design
Usability and conversion rate
Developing a unique website design requires the involvement of many specialists — not only designers, but marketers too. It's precisely this comprehensive approach and expertise across different fields that makes it possible to build a convenient site structure covering all the needs of potential customers, which in turn leads to better conversion rates
Template websites are made for a broad audience, so they won't always be convenient for your potential customers
Functionality
A website with a unique design is built from scratch. First of all, this is good because the future site can be optimized for speed to match the required functionality, and new features can be added easily whenever needed.
A template website depends on a specific CMS. Template sites may also carry a lot of excess functionality that needlessly loads your site, or conversely, too little functionality, which you'll then have to implement yourself or pay extra for the necessary modules.
Savings on advertising
Such a website has a much lower bounce rate and a higher conversion rate compared to a template option. That's because both designers and marketers are involved in developing the design from scratch, and the site is built to address all the questions/objections of the target audience.
A high bounce rate, which in turn leads to higher advertising costs to get the same number of conversions and leads compared to a unique website design.
SEO promotion
Portals, online stores and other types of websites have much better organic promotion in search engines. Such sites quickly gain rankings right from launch. This is because the necessary SEO «tricks» are built in at the design and development stage
When template websites are developed, no one thinks about promoting the resource, and even if they do and integrate everything needed, it may stop working over time. This is because search engines keep evolving, so solutions need to be revisited and improved periodically for better SEO promotion. Templates, on the other hand, are usually built once and forgotten — rarely maintained or expanded.
Positive impression
Coco Chanel said it best: «You never get a second chance to make a first impression». This applies exactly to a target customer's first visit to your website. And it plays a major role in whether they stay on the site and eventually become your customer, or leave without spending even 5 seconds to check out your offer and uniqueness
Template websites clearly lose on this front, since they're everywhere and impress no one. Think, for example, of how sites on the well-known Ukrainian marketplace Prom.ua look, and how often you see the very same design. Now think about whether you could stand out from competitors with a design like that and be remembered by target customers who might buy again or recommend you to friends.
Reputation
A modern, sharp website design is a great way to demonstrate your edge over competitors and encourage potential partners toward possible cooperation
Standing out from the rest
Today it's important for a business to stand out and be «memorable». Honestly, a unique website design alone won't do much for that, but it is an integral part of the overall effort. That overall effort also includes:
- branding
- developing a recognizable corporate style
- proper marketing
If your niche has little competition, or if you need to test a certain hypothesis/product/service, it's quite possible to try launching a site with a template design and running marketing on it. The difference won't be very noticeable, but is there really anything genuinely low-competition on the market these days?
Cost
Designing a website of this type can cost almost half the price of the entire project. That's because at least 8 specialists are involved in the work, and this kind of design is built right from the start with marketing, branding and other company goals in mind. For example, the cost of developing a website with a unique design is as follows:
- Landing page: from $800 (+ developer work from $600)
- Corporate website: from $1000 (+ developer work from $1200)
- Online store: from $1200 (+ developer work from $1500)
Here it all depends on the type of website the template will be used for and the platform it's integrated with, so let's look at a few popular options:
- Landing-page: $200 - $400 (WordPress, MODx)
- Corporate website: $600 - $1000 (WordPress, MODx)
- Online store: $1000 - $1600 (WordPress, MODx, OpenCart), from $2000 (Magento, Laravel)
Time
It's hard to calculate an exact timeframe for this type of website, so to give you a sense, we've decided to lay out the minimum thresholds the same way we did for cost:
- Landing page: from 7 days (+ developer work from 3 days)
- Corporate website: from 10 days (+ developer work from 12 days)
- Online store: from 10 days (+ developer work from 14 days)
On average for launching a project (if all the content for filling it is ready):
- Landing page: 2-3 days
- Corporate website: 3-7 days
- Online store: 5-10 days
Still not sure which type of website to choose?
Let's discuss all the details together!
Website design development stages
When creating a unique website design, we break the work down into the following stages
01 01 Setting goals
We get in touch with you in a convenient way and confirm all the tasks and goals for the project
02 02 Recommendations from specialists
At this stage, the marketer and SEO specialist provide recommendations on what needs to be done on the site first and foremost, so it's taken into account and approved with you at the structure and prototype stage. After that, they move on to analyzing the market and competitors, based on which they'll give further recommendations later.
03 03 Structure and prototype
At this stage, the UX designer takes over, working on the site structure and building a prototype based on the other specialists' recommendations. In most cases, we build a tree-like structure using the Octopus service, and send it to you for approval. Once it's approved, we move on to the prototype
04 04 Site concept
Once the prototype is approved, we start working on the site concept. At this stage we define the style and offer a few variations of it. We send you all the references, and once the concept is approved, we move on to the next stage.
05 05 Gathering and handing over information
This stage involves gathering the necessary information, such as:
- Recommendations from marketers on the «tricks» that should be applied to the site based on market and competitor analysis.
- The approved site structure and its prototype.
- The approved site concept.
- And all of your wishes, which were directly discussed at every stage.
06 06 Homepage design
At this stage, UI designers take over the work. They usually develop two versions of the homepage. This is needed so you can understand which one you like more, and based on that preference, all the site's inner pages will be designed.
07 07 Inner pages design
Once the homepage version is approved, the designers move on to creating the design for all of the site's inner pages. At this stage there are two options for handing pages over for approval:
- We hand over each page as soon as it's ready (this way, if the site's deadlines are tight, each page can be handed to developers in parallel without waiting for all of them to finish)
- We hand over all the pages at once, once they're all finished
08 08 Adapting for devices
This stage is meant for creating the design of all site pages for the tablet and mobile versions, including possible screen rotations. Depending on the requirements, this stage may involve just adapting the design (rearranging blocks and changing how it functions) or building an entirely different structure, if that's needed for the mobile version of the site/app
09 09 Handing over materials
This is the final stage of website design creation. It involves gathering all the information for developers (such as fonts, cut-out photos and icons, sorting all the material into folders, specs from marketers and designers on implementing various blocks) and handing all of that material directly over to you.
6 reasons not to save money on website design
Many people might think there's no point in bringing in extra specialists to design a website. Of course you can manage without them, but consider what that might cost you down the line, for example during the development of the site itself or comprehensive marketing
If you think the first step is to design the website — or the whole site in general — and only then work on filling it with content, you're mistaken. Text content plays a huge role in conversion rate, since it affects how the site looks.
If the site needs to be promoted in search engines, an SEO specialist should be involved while the design is being worked on. They will give recommendations on what to adjust in the design from an SEO standpoint for better ranking in search engines
A marketer should also be involved in the website design work. They'll assess the quality of content from the copywriter, gather the necessary information, process it and apply it for commercial purposes when developing the design layouts.
When creating a website design, it's important to think carefully about the Mind Map. A poorly thought-out map can cost you a significant number of potential customers and make you lose the «ease» of adding further integrations as the project scales. That's why a UX designer should be added to the team
For a website to meet business needs, it has to be convenient to use across different devices. If you design a website for only one device (say, the desktop version), you can lose a significant amount of traffic from other devices, because the structure wasn't fully thought through for them.
A project manager is exactly the person who will save you time and money on further website development. They play an important role in the website design process, namely:
- Coordinates the work of all specialists, approves their ideas, etc.
- Communicates between you and the specialists (if you did this yourself, you'd have to contact everyone separately, which can turn into a «broken telephone» problem)
- Decides which design option gets sent to you, and explains why it should be done exactly as shown in a particular page design.
